Approving the highway plan

The Town of Strathmore supported the most recent option for realignment of Highway 1 last week, and included a request that construction commence as soon as possible.

At their regular council meeting on January 18 the vote was four to three to support the plan, but the hands weren’t raising because they didn’t like the route, it was a matter of concerns being included in the letter.

Councillor Rocky Blokland made the first motion, asking that council support the proposed route with five conditions. Those conditions would have ensured signs on the east and west sides of Strathmore, before the bypass, advertising the town’s services; that Alberta Transportation pave the highway and all service roads before handing it over to Strathmore; a minimum of 40 feet of clearance on the overpass; control of the highway through town would be given to Strathmore when the bypass is operational; that the Eagle Lake path will continue.

“We’re strictly telling transportation that we are in favour of a move,” said Councillor Earl Best. “I feel putting five conditions in now is not expedient for us.”

Councillor John Rempel said that there will be many concerns brought forward throughout the process and this isn’t the time to do that. Councillor Bob Sobol suggested that a subcommittee be formed to handle this process, ensuring that proper attention is paid to it.

Councillors Blokland and Dave Hamilton along with Mayor Steve Grajczyk were opposed to removing the five concerns, but the rest of council had the majority. The motion to send a letter to Alberta Transportation in favour of the most recent plans was passed.

Impressive movie special effects aside, Dec. 21, 2012, won't be the end of the world as we know. It will, however, be another winter solstice.

Much like Y2K, 2012 has been analyzed and the science of the end of the Earth thoroughly studied. Contrary to some of the common beliefs out there, the science behind the end of the world quickly unravels when pinned down to the 2012 timeline. Below, NASA Scientists answer several questions that we're frequently asked regarding 2012.

Question (Q): Are there any threats to the Earth in 2012? Many Internet websites say the world will end in December 2012.
Answer (A): Nothing bad will happen to the Earth in 2012. Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012.

Q: What is the origin of the prediction that the world will end in 2012?
A: The story started with claims that Nibiru, a supposed planet discovered by the Sumerians, is headed toward Earth. This catastrophe was initially predicted for May 2003, but when nothing happened the doomsday date was moved forward to December 2012. Then these two fables were linked to the end of one of the cycles in the ancient Mayan calendar at the winter solstice in 2012 -- hence the predicted doomsday date of December 21, 2012.

Q: Does the Mayan calendar end in December 2012?
A: Just as the calendar you have on your kitchen wall does not cease to exist after December 31, the Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count period but then -- just as your calendar begins again on January 1 -- another long-count period begins for the Mayan calendar.

Q: Could phenomena occur where planets align in a way that impacts Earth?
A: There are no planetary alignments in the next few decades, Earth will not cross the galactic plane in 2012, and even if these alignments were to occur, their effects on the Earth would be negligible. Each December the Earth and sun align with the approximate center of the Milky Way Galaxy but that is an annual event of no consequence.

"There apparently is a great deal of interest in celestial bodies, and their locations and trajectories at the end of the calendar year 2012. Now, I for one love a good book or movie as much as the next guy. But the stuff flying around through cyberspace, TV and the movies is not based on science. There is even a fake NASA news release out there..."
- Don Yeomans, NASA senior research scientistQ: Is there a planet or brown dwarf called Nibiru or Planet X or Eris that is approaching the Earth and threatening our planet with widespread destruction?
A: Nibiru and other stories about wayward planets are an Internet hoax. There is no factual basis for these claims. If Nibiru or Planet X were real and headed for an encounter with the Earth in 2012, astronomers would have been tracking it for at least the past decade, and it would be visible by now to the naked eye. Obviously, it does not exist. Eris is real, but it is a dwarf planet similar to Pluto that will remain in the outer solar system; the closest it can come to Earth is about 4 billion miles.

Q: What is the polar shift theory? Is it true that the earth’s crust does a 180-degree rotation around the core in a matter of days if not hours?
A: A reversal in the rotation of Earth is impossible. There are slow movements of the continents (for example Antarctica was near the equator hundreds of millions of years ago), but that is irrelevant to claims of reversal of the rotational poles. However, many of the disaster websites pull a bait-and-shift to fool people. They claim a relationship between the rotation and the magnetic polarity of Earth, which does change irregularly, with a magnetic reversal taking place every 400,000 years on average. As far as we know, such a magnetic reversal doesn’t cause any harm to life on Earth. A magnetic reversal is very unlikely to happen in the next few millennia, anyway.

A: The Earth has always been subject to impacts by comets and asteroids, although big hits are very rare. The last big impact was 65 million years ago, and that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs. Today NASA astronomers are carrying out a survey called the Spaceguard Survey to find any large near-Earth asteroids long before they hit. We have already determined that there are no threatening asteroids as large as the one that killed the dinosaurs. All this work is done openly with the discoveries posted every day on the NASA NEO Program Office website, so you can see for yourself that nothing is predicted to hit in 2012.

Q: How do NASA scientists feel about claims of pending doomsday?
A: For any claims of disaster or dramatic changes in 2012, where is the science? Where is the evidence? There is none, and for all the fictional assertions, whether they are made in books, movies, documentaries or over the Internet, we cannot change that simple fact. There is no credible evidence for any of the assertions made in support of unusual events taking place in December 2012.

Q: Is there a danger from giant solar storms predicted for 2012?
A: Solar activity has a regular cycle, with peaks approximately every 11 years. Near these activity peaks, solar flares can cause some interruption of satellite communications, although engineers are learning how to build electronics that are protected against most solar storms. But there is no special risk associated with 2012. The next solar maximum will occur in the 2012-2014 time frame and is predicted to be an average solar cycle, no different than previous cycles throughout history.

A Letter from a Shelter Manager - Anonymous

I think our society needs a huge "Wake-up" call. As a shelter manager, I am going to share a little insight with you all...a view from the inside if you will.

First off, all of you breeders/sellers should be made to work in the "back" of an animal shelter for just one day. Maybe if you saw the life drain from a few sad, lost, confused eyes, you would change your mind about breeding and selling to people you don't even know.

That puppy you just sold will most likely end up in my shelter when it's not a cute little puppy anymore. So how would you feel if you knew that there's about a 90% chance that dog will never walk out of the shelter it is going to be dumped at? Purebred or not! About 50% of all of the dogs that are "owner surrenders" or "strays", that come into my shelter are purebred dogs.

The most common excuses I hear are; "We are moving and we can't take our dog (or cat)." Really? Where are you moving too that doesn't allow pets? Or they say "The dog got bigger than we thought it would". How big did you think a German Shepherd would get? "We don't have time for her". Really? I work a 10-12 hour day and still have time for my 6 dogs! "She's tearing up our yard". How about making her a part of your family? They always tell me "We just don't want to have to stress about finding a place for her we know she'll get adopted, she's a good dog".

Odds are your pet won't get adopted & how stressful do you think being in a shelter is? Well, let me tell you, your pet has 72 hours to find a new family from the moment you drop it off. Sometimes a little longer if the shelter isn't full and your dog manages to stay completely healthy. If it sniffles, it dies. Your pet will be confined to a small run/kennel in a room with about 25 other barking or crying animals. It will have to relieve itself where it eats and sleeps. It will be depressed and it will cry constantly for the family that abandoned it. If your pet is lucky, I will have enough volunteers in that day to take him/her for a walk. If I don't, your pet won't get any attention besides having a bowl of food slid under the kennel door and the waste sprayed out of its pen with a high-powered hose. If your dog is big, black or any of the "Bully" breeds (pit bull, rottie, mastiff, etc) it was pretty much dead when you walked it through the front door.

Those dogs just don't get adopted. It doesn't matter how 'sweet' or 'well behaved' they are.

If your dog doesn't get adopted within its 72 hours and the shelter is full, it will be destroyed. If the shelter isn't full and your dog is good enough, and of a desirable enough breed it may get a stay of execution, but not for long . Most dogs get very kennel protective after about a week and are destroyed for showing aggression. Even the sweetest dogs will turn in this environment. If your pet makes it over all of those hurdles chances are it will get kennel cough or an upper respiratory infection and will be destroyed because shelters just don't have the funds to pay for even a $100 treatment.

Here's a little euthanasia 101 for those of you that have never witnessed a perfectly healthy, scared animal being "put-down".

First, your pet will be taken from its kennel on a leash. They always look like they think they are going for a walk happy, wagging their tails. Until they get to "The Room", every one of them freaks out and puts on the brakes when we get to the door. It must smell like death or they can feel the sad souls that are left in there, it's strange, but it happens with every one of them. Your dog or cat will be restrained, held down by 1 or 2 vet techs depending on the size and how freaked out they are. Then a euthanasia tech or a vet will start the process. They will find a vein in the front leg and inject a lethal dose of the "pink stuff". Hopefully your pet doesn't panic from being restrained and jerk. I've seen the needles tear out of a leg and been covered with the resulting blood and been deafened by the yelps and screams. They all don't just "go to sleep", sometimes they spasm for a while, gasp for air and defecate on themselves.

When it all ends, your pets corpse will be stacked like firewood in a large freezer in the back with all of the other animals that were killed waiting to be picked up like garbage. What happens next? Cremated? Taken to the dump? Rendered into pet food? You'll never know and it probably won't even cross your mind. It was just an animal and you can always buy another one, right?

I hope that those of you that have read this are bawling your eyes out and can't get the pictures out of your head I deal with everyday on the way home from work.

I hate my job, I hate that it exists & I hate that it will always be there unless you people make some changes and realize that the lives you are affecting go much farther than the pets you dump at a shelter.

Between 9 and 11 MILLION animals die every year in shelters and only you can stop it. I do my best to save every life I can but rescues are always full, and there are more animals coming in everyday than there are homes.

My point to all of this DON'T BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER PETS DIE!

Hate me if you want to. The truth hurts and reality is what it is. I just hope I maybe changed one persons mind about breeding their dog, taking their loving pet to a shelter, or buying a dog. I hope that someone will walk into my shelter and say "I saw this and it made me want to adopt". THAT WOULD MAKE IT WORTH IT.

Hello all,

As you may or may not know, my Dad Barry Charters, has had a stroke. This happened late Thursday morning November 18, 2010, at our farm. We have since found out that the stroke was in the thalmus part of the brain. He is now being treated with specific medication for that type of stroke. He has no mobility right now and is just starting to come "out of the fog" with his memory. We are asking for all of your prayers and love.

Also, on another note, dad will no longer be able to run the farm. We are in desperate need to sell all of our beloved alpacas. "Mind your own business." This is something we hear everyday. It's something that has been ingrained in our minds. Something we are taught from a very young age. Mind your own business.

I, for one, despise this lesson and I pray that I never teach it to my daughter or any future children.

Today I was taking my dog for a walk - a pathway we take literally every day, sometimes twice a day. I know all the dogs on the walk. I know them by name, and say hello to them all as we walk by. Sometimes I bring treats for them, but because I know that I would not like it if a stranger handed my dog a treat, I keep it on the down low. I love animals, and would never hurt them, but I don't trust others.

As we walked by this one house, with this one particular dog who tends to bark and jump, his female owner was outside. She started yelling at him when he got excited that we were walking by. Then she kicked him and started hitting him. At first, my instinct was to keep tight lip and walk by quicker. I heard him bark, I heard her yell at him, I heard her kick him, and I heard him whimper. I couldn't by "that guy" and keep my mouth shut. I whispered "stop." She kicked him again. I said it louder, "stop." I heard him whimper again, and I yelled as loud as I possibly could, "STOP! STOP! STOP HURTING HIM!" She ignored me. I yelled it again, louder and louder every time I said the words. Stop hurting him.

She stopped.

I started walking away again. I stopped, turned around and yelled again "He's JUST A DOG! We have no right to hurt them. STOP hurting him!"

She ignored me. She didn't even look up.

I called the SPCA. Please, we need to stop being bystanders. We need to start standing up for those who are being abused. If you have a friend who's being beaten by his or her spouse, or if you know of a child being abused by its parents, we'd call someone about it, right?? We wouldn't let it continue. Animals deserve to be treated with the same kindness. It is said that "animals don't ask for anything from us, but love." That's what they deserve.

If you ever hear of someone treating an animal poorly, please take the initiative and call the SPCA. Their number is 1-800-455-9003. They are open Monday - Friday, but they check their messages regularly throughout the weekends and evenings. Please, don't "mind your own business." Stand up for those who can't stand up for themselves.

Ride to Conquer Cancer

You may or may not know, but I'm participating in the Ride to Conquer Cancer this June and have committed to raising a minimum of $2500. In order to accomplish this, I have done some fundraising but it hasn't been enough so I've set up a charity BBQ at M&M Meats in Strathmore for June 12 from 10am until 3pm.

If you are already in Strathmore, then grab your friends and family and come on by for a burger and drink to help support my ride. If you aren't already here, then come on out, it's a nice drive! If you are coming from the West, then drive East into Strathmore, turn left at the 3rd set of lights (just past Wal-Mart) then a left again at the next set of lights into the shopping complex parking lot, M&M Meats is right there.

Please come by for a burger and help support me in this important cause!

As many of you know, the staff at the Newsy Neighbor are HUGE animal lovers. We all have pets and we all love them like they are part of our family.

We got an email today from the Rocky Mountain Animal Rescue foundation and I wanted to send off some info!

CIRCULATE to your friends, family and contacts.

In the coming days, DO NOT open any message with an attachment called: Black in the White House, regardless of who sent it to you. It is a virus that opens an Olympics torch that burns the whole hard disk C of your computer. This virus comes from a known person who you have in your list.

Directions: You should send this message to all of your contacts. It is better to receive this e-mail 25 times than to receive the virus and open it. If you receive a message called Black in the White House even if sent by a friend, do not open, and shut down your machine immediately. It is the worst virus announced by CNN. This new virus has been discovered recently it has been classified by Microsoft as the virus most destructive ever.

This virus was discovered yesterday afternoon by McAfee. There is no repair yet for this kind of virus. This virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the hard disk, where vital information function is stored.

The 100 Mile an Hour Goat

Aleesha and Denise are out walking, when they come upon a huge hole in the ground. They approach it and are amazed by the size of it. Denise says "Wow, that's some hole, I can't even see the bottom. I wonder how deep it is?"

Aleesha says" I don't know, let's throw something down and listen and see how long it takes to hit bottom."

Denise says "There's this old automobile transmission here, give me a hand and we'll throw it in and see".

So they pick it up and carry it over, and count one, and two and three, and throw it in the hole. They are standing there listening and looking over the edge and they hear a rustling in the brush behind them.

As they turn around they see a goat come crashing through the brush, running toward the hole at great speed, and with no hesitation jump head first into the hole.

While they are standing there looking at each other, looking in the hole and trying to figure out what that was all about, old farmer Kathryn walks up. "Say there", says the Farmer Kathryn, "you fellers didn't happen to see my goat around here anywhere, did you?"

Denise says "Funny you should ask, we were just standing here a minute ago and a goat came running out of the bushes doing about a hundred miles an hour and jumped headfirst into this hole here!"

Farmer Kathryn said "Why that's impossible, I had him chained to a transmission!"
